普通话 is the official language of the People’s Republic of China and is also known as Standard Mandarin or Putonghua. It is based on the Beijing dialect and is used as the lingua franca in China for communication between people who speak different dialects. It is also the language used in government, education, media, and business. The term 普通话 literally means “common speech” and it is the most widely spoken language in the world with over 1 billion speakers.
