The Chinese word 为 has multiple meanings and uses, but one of its most common functions is as a preposition that indicates “for” or “to do something for the sake of”. For example, you might say “我为你而来”, which means “I came for you”. 为 can also be used as a verb to mean “to be” or “to act as”, as in “他为公司的CEO”, which means “He is the CEO of the company”.
